Nugu Roundup #66 - Get on the Gavy Train - 201122 + Final Album Giveaway of 2020

2020.11.22 21:58 tutetibiimperes Nugu Roundup #66 - Get on the Gavy Train - 201122 + Final Album Giveaway of 2020

Hello and welcome to the latest Nugu Roundup!
What is this?: This is a weekly feature designed to highlight the unknown/underappreciated groups and soloists working hard in the Kpop world that often fall under the radar. Please share your own information, favorite performance videos, fanmeet stories, or anything else relevant below!
Last week we took a look at the super-nugu boy group Block Chain. This week I'd like to explore a group who I've loved for quite a while, but have been hesitant to feature for a variety of reasons. Depending on how closely you follow Korean vocal/ballad groups you may not consider them to be nugu at all, after all, they've been around since 2005. At the same time, looking through the history of posts in the subreddit their music and news has received very little attention, so I'm going to go with the 'nugu at least to the western Kpop audience' definition with them. Their music also trends towards a more 'Korean adult contemporary' vibe than traditional Idol music, but as I've featured bands that also diverge from that path in the past, and since it's autumn, which is a great time to listen to ballads, I felt y'all might be open to learning about and exploring the discography of Gavy NJ! (fans of more upbeat stuff don't despair though - they certainly have some more upbeat and fun tracks as well!) (due to the amount of content for this week's featured group there will be no soloist of the week or In Memoriam this week)
Look at the first comment below for the winner of the twentieth (and final of 2020) Nugu Roundup Album Giveaway, plus details on this week's album up for grabs!
What is Nugu?: While in Korean it literally means 'Who' in the broader Kpop context it refers to groups that are generally unknown amongst the greater public. It doesn't have to mean they're extremely new, though it can, and there are of course varying degrees of 'unknown' which some groups having very strong niche fandoms and others being almost invisible. I take a fairly broad view and will include groups that may be known to some, but who don't have widespread name recognition.
Let's get on with the show...

GAVY NJ
Who are they?: A three member vocal/ballad girl group under GoodFellas Entertainment. They debuted in 2005 (and are in fact celebrating their 15th anniversary this month). Their name came from combining the family names of the three original members (none of whom are still members of the group). Their fandom name is Happiness. Despite their long running time as a group, and while they have had some membership changes, there have only been a total of seven members, including the current three, in the 15 year history of the group.
Company: GoodFellas Entertainment has represented Gavy NJ since 2010, previously the group had with Berry Good Entertainment and Vitamin Entertainment. GoodFellas was founded by the group's primary producer Min Kyung Ki and also represents male vocal groups The Postmen and 6 to 8 as well as soloist Ara.

YouTube Channel: via GoodFellas TV (hasn't been updated in a while) and Gavy NJ Official
Random Stuff:
Trivia: The group says part of the secret to their longevity is that they have many breakup songs and that many women like to listen to breakup songs after the break up. The members have individual YouTube channels with: Gunji, Seorin, and Jenny. Despite the line up changes and the many years of activity plus experimentations with new sounds the current members say the soul of the original group still lives within them and that there will always be a distinctive character to the group's sound. The group faced some controversy that their title track Lie was similar to Jennifer Lopez's Brave (which paradoxically was more popular in South Korea than the United States). The group came close to a music show win with their 2009 comeback Love Story but unfortunately it was competing with the utter-domination of SNSD's Gee, so the group had to settle for a second-place showing. Likewise the group has flirted with major chart success at various points in the past, with their first two albums reaching within the top-ten on the Gaon Album Charts, and once more with their Sunflower EP. Their peak single positions have been at 11 on the Gaon Charts with Sunfower and You Are Not the Man. Their debut album was their best seller with over 60,000 copies sold, however their physical sales have dwindled with the last several releases failing to eclipse 1,000 sales each despite the quality of their music being better than ever.

2020.11.13 23:46 finnagains How Quibi's Boomer Execs Sabotaged A $2BN Company By Being Completely Out Of Touch - by Tyler Durden (Zero Hedge) 13 Nov 2020

he downfall of Quibi has created an interesting counterpoint to the fall of Theranos. Though the companies were situated in very different industries, the Theranos story centers around a young woman who treacherously conned investors, journalists and even some of her own employees, before a small group of rebels gave the story up to the Wall Street Journal, which brough the whole sham crashing down.
On the other hand, Quibi wasn't an illegal scheme; it remains an obviously legitimate business, and it's certainly possible that a rival like Netflix or Hulu might scoop up some of the assets Quibi might be selling after Jeffrey Katzenberg announced plans to shut it down after an abysmal rollout during the pandemic that made the company into a laughingstock. Customers who signed up for Quibi's free trial quickly discovered, much to their eventual disappointment, that there was no way to watch the shows on their laptop, or a TV. Quibi's founders effectively engaged in an act of self-sabotage by ensuring that the smartphone app was the only venue in which their content - the quick "bites" from which Quibi's name is (again, confusingly) derived - could be consumed.
Many seemingly bone-headed decisions about the product, programming and the rollout have been documented by Bloomberg and WSJ (we've added our two cents' worth here and here), but since announcing plans to shut down, Katzenberg and Whitman, who have both been saddled with massive personal losses from the venture, have tried their hardest to project an air of humility and graciousness.
However, that task just got a lot harder, as Bloomberg's Businessweek earlier today published a deeply sourced piece elaborating on the many flaws and failures in Katzenberg's initial vision for the product. Those problems were only exacerbated by the out-of-touch arrogance exhibited by Katzenberg and his partner, Whitman, whom he recruited to the project, according to reports. Viewers who watched Whitman's early CNBC interviews pitching Quibi probably remember cringe-worthy moments, like when she reveals that the company's name is derived from the phrase "Quick Bites", or when she described Quibi as a revolutionary new medium, seemingly without realizing that hilarious short videos, sometimes with scripted plots, have been posted to YouTube for free since the mid-aughts.
Between shelling out $6 million to Reese Witherspoon to do a voice-over for an animal TV program that nobody watched, to Whitman awkwardly placing her newly purchased LA condo back on the market without saying a word to anyone at the company, Bloomberg chronicles many details from a company that was driven into the ground by two stubborn, know-it-all boomer executives who thought their focus-group-backed wisdom was simply beyond reproach.
The Condo Incident
Whitman, one of Silicon Valley’s most powerful women, had moved to L.A. to work with people like that. She’d been recruited a year earlier by Jeffrey Katzenberg, the Hollywood megaproducer who co-founded DreamWorks Animation, who was betting that the future of entertainment was short-form videos with old-school studio production values. Whitman was to be the CEO of a streaming service with episodic programming that aimed to wow a generation raised on YouTube.
But the service, called Quibi, premiered this past spring to crickets and jeers. Over the summer, Whitman talked her team through a retooling plan and acted as though she planned to remain in L.A. for a good, long while. But in early August, less than two years after she bought the Sierra Towers condo, she put it back on the market.
Her staffers noticed. Several circulated the real estate listing, spurring a wave of quiet searches for employment elsewhere. More than one marks that as the beginning of the end for Quibi. “When your CEO puts their L.A. home up for sale less than two years after buying it, that’s when you know the writing is on the wall,” says one former Quibi employee, who, like most of the 24 current and former staffers interviewed for this story, spoke on condition of anonymity to protect future job prospects.
That Song From 'Trolls'
When Katzenberg and Whitman finally broke news of the shutdown to employees, an unexpectedly swift death for a company that had launched its product just 7 months before. As misty eyes filled the room, Katzenberg reportedly encouraged his team to listen to a song from the animated feature film "Trolls" (one of Katzenberg's former projects) to help lift their spirits.
Toward the end of October, Quibi’s seventh month in the crowded streaming market, Whitman and Katzenberg assembled their employees on a video call to tell them the company would be shutting down around Dec. 1. A misty-eyed, apologetic Katzenberg encouraged employees to comfort themselves by playing the song Get Back Up Again from the DreamWorks movie Trolls.
TV On The Internet
In particular, several staffers told Bloomberg that Whitman and Katzenberg insisted on recruiting the most expensive Hollywood talent, instead of relying on cheaper social media stars with established followings among a younger audience that Quibi and its rivals covet. This was perhaps one of the biggest reasons why the company failed so quickly, as it blew its load by paying $6 million for Reese Witherspoon to do a voice-over for an animal show that nobody watched.
Bloomberg apparently saw a pitch-deck slide breaking down salaries paid for some of these "lighthouse" shows and...well...
Several current and former Quibi employees say Katzenberg built himself a punishing schedule. In the weeks after Quibi went live, he’d rise by 3:30 each morning, work out while reading the news from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m., and conduct as many as 20 FaceTime meetings a day, turning most any interaction along the way into an impromptu meeting about the company. He divided show ideas into three categories: the titular “quick bites” (short, one-off videos), “daily essentials” (news programs), and “lighthouse” shows (projects involving A-listers). The latter ate up most of the budget. According to a Quibi pitch deck seen by Bloomberg Businessweek, lighthouse shows generally cost $20,000 to $125,000 a minute, compared with roughly $10,000 a minute for daily essentials. Fuqua’s series, #FreeRayshawn, which stars Laurence Fishburne and Stephan James, cost $15 million for 15 episodes of 10 minutes each, a competitive budget for today’s streaming services. Netflix Inc.’s Stranger Things costs $6 million to $8 million for episodes that typically run for 45 minutes to an hour, and Disney+ is expected to spend as much as $25 million an episode on Marvel shows such as Hawkeye and WandaVision. But in another respect, Quibi sweetened the deals far beyond what other streaming services were willing to offer. Two years in, creators would be free to edit their Quibi shows together into an extended work and sell the longer version somewhere else. After seven years the company’s rights to the short-form versions would expire.
Katzenberg also applied his decades of development experience, something current and former employees say was part of the problem. The 69-year-old former wunderkind often insisted that he weigh in on everything from casting to wardrobe to graphic design, frequently via FaceTime with printouts of his notes next to him. He invested aggressively in somewhat out-there series with recognizable names attached, such as Most Dangerous Game, starring Liam Hemsworth and Christoph Waltz; Dummy, starring Anna Kendrick; and Thanks a Million, a giveaway reality show produced by Jennifer Lopez. To narrate voiceover for Fierce Queens, a wildlife program produced by BBC Studios, Quibi paid Reese Witherspoon $6 million. (Her husband, Jim Toth, was Quibi’s head of content acquisitions.)
What's Next?
Though SJW reporters would like to have the world believe that only men are capable of 'failing up', Whitman just might be moving on from Quibi with a job in the Biden administration, despite her history of...running for office (albeit, in California) as a Republican.
Whitman is an early contender for several cabinet-level positions in President-elect Joe Biden’s administration, according to three people familiar with the matter. Weeks after she put her L.A. condo up for sale, the former Republican gubernatorial candidate appeared during the Democratic National Convention to endorse Biden on national TV. “For me, the choice is simple,” Whitman said. “I’m with Joe.” It’s unclear what Katzenberg will do next, but the producer seems less likely to leave the entertainment industry behind. “One might wonder why sailing off into the sunset on a boat in the Caribbean isn’t an option for Jeffrey,” says Shapiro, the producer of Let’s Go, Atsuko! “But I don’t get the sense he’ll want this to be the last chapter of his storied career.”
It's worth noting that Katzenberg is also a major Democratic bundler, one of the biggest in Hollywood.
Many of her former employees weren't so lucky. Several complained to Bloomberg about feeling 'blindsided' by the shutdown, as Whitman and Katzenberg apparently kept the true enormity of the company's fiscal recklessness from the rest of the staff. In the end, many employees credited Katzenberg and his enormously over-inflated self-confidence, and his micromanaging style, for doing far more harm than good.
In the end, some $2 billion of investors' money was wasted. But at least Reese Witherspoon managed to secure a pretty generous payday.

That was all about the concise definition of CMS. Let's move on to learning the different kinds of CMS available out there.

Different types of CMS
There are multiple ways in which the CMS gets classified. Based on the source and cost, a top CMS development company classifies it into the following three types:

Here are essential things to consider while choosing a CMS
  • Drag and Drop feature: The CMS must allow easy creation and modification of the website's elements using the drag and drop feature. Having it is a boon for your content management process.
  • Simple to Design: The availability of multiple design templates to ensure the smooth designing of the website.
  • Support Extensions: Your business may require multiple features that are not available in the original CMS. The supporting extensions help in integrating all such features effectively.
  • SEO Friendly: SEO friendly URLS, tag, content, etc. are a must to ensure the remarkable digital presence of the business enterprise.
  • Mobile Responsive: Having a mobile responsive CMS ensures better UX as 60% of internet traffic comes from the mobile device and cannot get ignored for its stunning success.
  • Quick Customer Support: The CMS development company must offer you immediate customer support. Although they are relatively convenient to use, they are ultimately technical tools, and you may get stuck at some point requiring help from the experts.
More features like multilingual support, compatibility with emerging technologies, etc. play a crucial role while choosing the best CMS.

2020.09.11 13:48 jensyao over-analyzing Nas lines outside the scope of rapgenius: Jay ft Nas - Success

When Nas overthinks his lyrics, we overanalyze...that's just part of the game we play as listeners when deciphering Nas' lyrics: https://www.reddit.com/nas/comments/iio9um/nas_overthinking_the_songs_hes_writing_what_do/
I'll paint a brief picture with this one...again, when the verses were recorded for 2007, none of this had happened, so this is why this is outside the scope and a preview of things to come
https://genius.com/5202
On Jay's American Gangster album, Nas said:
  • But I don't give a fuck, walk inside the lion's den...Up your catalog, dog, mine's worth too much/Like Mike Jacks ATV pub, Mottola can't touch
The original annotation says:
Nas is bragging about how much his catalog of songs is worth, comparing it to Michael Jackson’s ATV Music Publishing (owner of The Beatles‘ songs and others). The 'Mottola can’t touch’ refers to an incident in 2001 when Sony Music Entertainment, headed by Tommy Mottola, unsuccessfully tried to take all of Jackson’s music rights
Sony is also the parent company of Columbia Records, Nas' old label. He could be saying that, like MJ, Tommy Mottola can’t touch his publishing either. Whether or not this boast is true remains to be seen…
Owning your publishing and owning your masters are two different things, with publishing being more lucrative. Master rights typically belong to either the artist(s), record label, recording studio, or any other party who financed the recording. Publishing rights belong to the owner of the actual music composition.
Michael Jackson had so much money that he bought many cataloges in his lifetime: the Beatles, Sly and the Family Stone, Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, and Aretha Franklin.
Eminem is known to get into his Slim Shady persona as a single to launch is upcoming album with "my name is" for "slim shady LP", "The Real Slim Shady" for "marshal mather's LP", "Without Me" for "The Eminem Show", "Just Lose It" for "Encore", onward etc, because causing controversy gets free publicity for the album. Eminem for "just lose it" made fun of Michael Jackson's alleged pedophilia but in the music video, Eminem was explicitly warned not to portray that but instead made fun of Michael Jackson's hair catching on fire for the pepsi commercial and his nose. Michael Jackson got pissed and bought the publishing to eminem's back catalog so whenever Eminem decides to make music, Micheal Jackson gets paid...this is how you settle beef on the business side, you don't make a diss record for them to respond back, you buy their publishing so they work for you...this demotivation and Proof dying just made Eminem take a leave of absence from rap in 2006. People from the black community still look up to Michael Jackson and when he made those moves, people paid attention.
When eminem was set to come back in 2009 with his lead singles 3AM/We Made You to start off his album, Michael Jackson mysteriously died later that same year....How is it that singers who own their master's like MJ, whitney houston, and Prince die so mysteriously? and then some record publishing company quietly takes a stake in their publishing years later? MJ was the first to die unexpectedly because MJ owned the masters to other people as well, and then came Whitney in 2012, and then Prince in 2016....
OK, let's take a tangent to talk about the record industry and record executives...they are egotistical, maniacal, and power hungry cut throat entities....when sound recording was invented in 1860 and slavery was abolished in 1865, blacks had to find work any way possible and some of them migrated up north to detroit to join the auto industry. Other stayed in their cities...Record labels saw black talent and paid them next to nothing where before there was color TV, you could only hear the voices, so black acts had to sound white for white bands to lipsync and cover their music for the music to have universal appeal because of their complexion. Because the record industry started and capitalized on literally ex-slave labor, the deals were horrendous from the beginning, because the labels and the record executives owns the lion share of the profits and the artist get paid enough to keep making music but remain relatively poor...they get paid in "fame points" like reddit/genius authors get paid in "internet points".
You don't hear about record executives unless they make significant news...you think suge knight was cut throat? At least suge knight was vocal about his actions. the record executives like Tommy Mottola was once married to Mariah Carey but when Mariah divorced him, Mottola did everything in his power to sabotage Mariah's career and if it wasn't for Mariah's talents and her appeal to the r&b community, her career might have folded with Mottola's influence driven by revenge and obsession. As the original annotation says, Mottola unsuccessfully tried to take Jackson's publishing rights back to Sony, which is also a parent to Columbia, Nas' label at the time. Mottola basically took a then industry plant Jennifer Lopez and pit her against Mariah Carey by trying to appeal to the r&b market to the point of using the same samples to sabotage Mariah Carey's singles. JLo has many times where she was caught lipsyncing to other singer's vocals, most notably Ashanti's, for I'm Real remix, and most of her collaborations with murder inc...on some songs, it obviously doesn't even sound like JLo was singing, such as Get Right...and this was all for Mottola to get back at Mariah for their divorce because every time Mariah is trying to release an album or staging her comeback, JLo somehow comes out lipsyncing to another ghost singer's hit record around the same time.
In addition, Jimmy Iovine, the head of interscope, was infamously associated for calling the Feds to raid Murder Inc's offices with their association with drug trafficker Supreme so that Ja Rule could not respond to 50 Cent's diss on "Back down" due to the Fed's monitoring their actions until a full year was passed with "Clap Back" because Ja Rule was a huge artist at the time and Jimmy Iovine needed extra insurance that the new artist 50 Cent was to win his beef with Ja Rule. Jimmy was quoted that he was a business man who will snitch if it is to his advantage in front of 50 Cent in 50 Cent's new book, Hustle Harder, Hustle Smarter. What make Iovine relevant in this situation is that the Shady imprint was held under Interscope, and Iovine was probably pulling some puppet strings to get Eminem's catalog out the grasp and influence of MJ's possession and his top money maker Eminem who crosses over into mainstream audience into White America need to be incentivized to work for the record labels to earn more money.
Basically, record labels and record executives are the puppet master of things that move behind the scenes of why some artists get a lot of funding and others' career fold unexpectedly. Their seek for control for publishing rights and 360 deals is how also people who own their masters die unexpectedly and the label then quietly recoup the master's years later...like how Sony finally acquires MJ's publishing through his estate years later in 2018 with no fanfare or announcement because back when MJ was alive in 2001, Mottola tried but failed, which is what Nas was referring to.
OK, now back to Nas and Jay. In 1996, Jay sampled Nas on Dead Presidents and he wanted Nas to redo the vocals because the clean acapella removed the f-word for "I'm out for dead fucking presidents to represent me" for Jay to sample, but Nas was big at the time and didn't want to cosign a rapper without a record out. Only in the Q-tip remix and later in the 10th anniversary remixes does Nas drop the f-word on that dead presidents line. Nas does not use the f-word on the original Illmatic version of 'The World Is Yours'...this also is deep because Nas said that Dead Presidents' line in 1994 for "the world is yours q-tip remix", and in 1995 comes out a movie called Dead Presidents....and Jay was strategic with dropping Dead Presidents I and II as a single to match the movie's title but the single is not associated with the movie....hey where have we seen this move again? Jay did the same thing for American Gangster in 2008 as he did for Dead Presidents in 1996....He named his album/single after a movie for free promotion as an unofficial soundtrack/single where he was inspired by and piggy backed on that name for the album to carry more weight because the movie industry did more of the advertising for the same title and people would confuse Jay's CD for the official soundtrack. Back in 1996, Jay did this for his single instead of a whole album.
When Jay threw a jab at Nas at summer jam, Nas dropped H to the omo freestyle on rakim's paid in full beat and got Rakim's blessing, and nas said "I count off when you sampled my voice"...Jay responded to those lyrics and completed his Nas verse on Takeover by saying "You made it a hot line, I made it a hot song...I know who I paid, God–Serchlite Publishing". Jay owned his master's at Rocafella and Nas didn't but now Nas does with Mass Appeal records with his recent projects and somehow, Jay is in a 360 deal with Live nation but still owns his master's...when Takeover dropped, people were praising Jay for his bars where you had to think about what he was saying when he paid Serchlite Publishing to sample Nas because owning your master's and publishing was not big in Hip Hop at the time and Jay used his business savvy to claim superiority over Nas. And Nas came back on his verse for "Success" by saying that nobody can touch his publishing because he catalog is too expensive, almost as a jab back at Jay for sampling his voice that easily, and you had to think about that bar for the sake of who owns whose publishing, and mind you, Nas did his response jab when featured on a Jay-Z track, so whenever they perform it together, Jay gets to hear it live every time
With that stage set, let the publishing ownership games begin...2Pac infamously dissed Jay on "Fuck Friendz" released posthumously among other songs like the original version of 'Hit Em Up' and 'Watch Yo Mouth' and Jay had to pay 2Pac's estate when Kanye made the same beat for '03 Bonnie and Clyde' off 'Me and My Girlfriend'....when 2Pac's mother unexpectedly died in 2016, this was another mysterious death because she held the publishing rights to 2Pac with Amaru Records and she was primed to release another 2Pac album but it kept on delaying because of the poor reception to "Pac's Life's" singles/collaborations and some fans did not like Eminem's interpretation of 2Pac music either on "Loyal to the Game", where eminem wasn't an apt producer because he had to speed up 2Pac's vocals to fit the tempo of the instrumental and butchered 2Pac's voice to shout out G-unit and Jadakiss, when they weren't even on 2Pac's radar when he was alive. With 8 years of not releasing another 2Pac album or a documentary/soundtrack to commemorate 2Pac to generate money, there was also money mismanagement, where they were going to build a 2Pac Amaru institute in Georgia but the funding to that construction collapsed. Afeni Shakur had a suspicious death as well, where finally 2Pac's estate was up for auction without anybody blocking it to the point that 2Pac's car that he got shot in in Las Vegas was also put up for auction.
So Roc Nation and Jay Z ended up buying 2Pac's publishing for $385 million, realize that 2Pac's catalog is huge with his work ethic and he has a ton of unreleased songs, where they had the intention to drop another 2Pac album yet still to release. “We’ve purchased one of Hip-Hops greatest icons music which would make us one of the largest record labels in the world. We have a plan set in motion to release a new Tupac album in 2016 titled, ‘And Now I Rise’ which will feature Snoop Dogg (Snoop Lion), Drake, Nas, The Dream, DMX, Beyonce and of course Jay-Z. The album will be produced by Dr. Dre and Timbaland.” Again, people pay attention, it's no coincidence that this all happened. Jay brought MJ to summer jam and dissed Nas in 2001. Mottola unsuccessfully tried to buy MJ's catalog in 2001 for Sony but Sony eventually did in 2018...If you go by the way MJ handled Eminem, he didn't make songs to diss Eminem for making fun of him, MJ bought his catalog and that is how you really win beefs. So Jay bought 2Pac's catalog as a business move but also as a score to settle for being dissed by 2Pac. And what did Jay do with 2Pac's catalog? Nothing but sit on it and sometimes clear samples for other artists but that's it...no new 2Pac verses or songs/albums any time soon, and it's been 4 years since the announcement? It's not like a Jay Electronica situation where we had to motivate the artist to create the songs...2Pac's vocals have already been laid and it's up to the producer to recreate the instrumentals and match them with the correct collaborations. It was more of a business move and an ego trip for Jay to win that silent war he's been having with 2Pac's estate and to finally get rid of that chip off his shoulders more than anything.
I hope you understand how big of a chip Jay-Z still thinks he got on his shoulders...he has an unreleased diss record for 2Pac that he performed once live at the Apollo where the track never resurfaced out of respect of 2Pac's death. He bought 2Pac's catalog so whatever Jay sampled from 2Pac goes back into Jay's pockets because Death Row was still not cool with Jay-Z at the time when Jay did 03 Bonnie and Clyde and Jay had to give away a lot of royalties to Death row for that song for him to remake it, and then Death row released Fuck Friendz, which dissed Jay-Z on track number 2 posthumously in 2001.
and Nas literally went into "the Lion's Den" when he signed to Def Jam when Jay was the label's president in 2006 and also he when he went on Jay's home turf when being featured on Jay's album for the first time in 2007 and dropped knowledge and bars out-rapping Jay on his own song. Why do you think Jay and Nas only perform Dead Presidents and The world is yous together? They barely perform Black Republicans and they almost never perform Success, where Jay also bit off Eminem on that same song...."I used to give a fuck, now I give a fuck less/What do I think of success? It sucks, too much stress/I guess I blew up quick/'Cause friends I grew up with"...that is an eminem line from "I'm Back"....."I used to give a – fuck, now I could give a fuck less/What do I think of suc-cess/It sucks, too much press I’m stressed/Too much cess, depressed, too upset/It’s just too much mess, I guess I must just blew up quick"....And Nas dissed Jay-Z on Ether for saying that "Eminem murdered you on your own shit" and now when you're finally collaborating with Nas, you start off your first verse biting Eminem to keep up with Nas? "my own flows are foolish" as Jay said on "what more can i say" when he was originally accused of biting Big as a response to mostly Nas' diss on Ether "how much of biggie's rhymes are gonna come out your fat lips?" and now Eminem?...yeah, about that, right?
So, present year. Nas drops King's Disease, where the symptoms most describes Jay, where Jay is in the position of a king but still have insecurities, like you can take jay out the hood but can't take the hood out of jay. If you read beyond the lyrics, the message was not for most listeners because most listeners have yet to rise to that position of King, which is why some critics aren't vibing with it..you're missing the point. The album's message is mostly directed at Jay, where if you go to my reddit timeline link of Jay's and Nas' beef, the timeline still have remnants of subtle jabs til this day, from insecurities and jealousies, to sabotaging release days, to limiting the time Nas has to write his verse before Jay had to turn it in so that Jay doesn't get murdered on his own track by Nas if Nas was given enough time to craft a better verse, to jabs in the title, etc.
Look, Nas had to write his verse for Success at 4AM in the morning in Canada after a show because Jay had to turn it in. Nas was clearly at a disadvantage to complete his verse and yet he still murdered his verse. That was a subtle limited time sabotage Jay did to Nas and Jay did it again for Nas' feature on BBC.
The point is, Nas on King's disease was asking why does do people want to kill Nas when he said "Can I floss without you wanting me outlined in chalk?" on the title track. As mentioned with the recent music related mysterious deaths, they all point to people owning the rights to their master's...MJ, Whitney, Prince, 2Pac's mother...and who else owns their master's? Most prominently Jay and Nas, among others. These artists alive are all at risk for mysterious deaths when they stop or slow down their music production because the music industry is always looking for martyrs to capitalize on their deaths once music production slows down or ceases for one last money grab. Nas never drops every year...he's used to dropping every other year. Nas knows what's up with the shady music industry with shadow puppet masters, record labels, and executives. Nas just can't outright say the dangers of what he is facing so he is forced to put it coded in music as a dog whistle for specific people to receive the message...he's upping his music production after he was freed of having the court system misinterpret his rap lyrics when he was fighting for child custody against Kelis. There are specific dangers of owning your own publishing because the industry will make moves behind the scenes to recoup your catalog. Jay is friendly competition and Nas sees a bigger threat in the industry with labels and record executives so he is addressing it to all 1-percent or 0.1-percent fortune owners who all have the king's disease, which basically flies over the heads of most audiences, as most Nas records do when they are initially released and they grow on you years later after you have matured to his stage to think about life's consequences at that level.
So yeah, given that Jay saw MJ's strategy of buying up people's catalog to win beefs outright, Jay is eyeing on Nas' catalog to purchase if he were to have an untimely death and then it would be declared that Jay won the ultimate war against Nas as he did against 2Pac. So this story revolves around Nas, 2Pac, Jay, MJ, and Eminem because they are the biggest money makers for the record industry and record labels and executives are always coming up with new strategies to do heinous things for the sake of more profit.
Nas basically made a prophetic statement in 2007 because he wants to have his music catalog so large with great money management and people so that nobody ends up buying the rights to Nas' catalog...so when Nas said that verse in 2007, he didn't own his own record label until 2012 and he took strides in investments and upping his catalog, which is why it is worth repeating again, because it was foreshadowing for things to come and some of Nas' goals have been realized since then:
  • But I don't give a fuck, walk inside the lion's den...Up your catalog, dog, mine's worth too much/Like Mike Jacks ATV pub, Mottola can't touch
When they performed 'success' at the Apollo, you can tell which lines Jay were feeling based on what Nas bars Jay rapped along to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tp_K7Kg4AUM and as you clearly see, Jay did not recite the last bar at all, which is the one we just overanalyzed

2020.07.20 14:32 adalby12 Actors Who Were Considered For Oscar Nominated Roles - Would They Still Have Been Nominated/Would They Have Won? Best Actress 2000-2019

A couple of commenters decided I should do all of the categories in the 2000s first, so here is the list of people who were considered for roles that were nominated for the Best Actress award from the 2001 ceremony honouring the films of 2000 to the 2020 ceremony honouring films of 2019. Would any of these performances have been better? Would these actresses still have garnered that Oscar nomination? Could they even have won?
Harriet (2019) - When the project first began development in 2015, it was set to star VIOLA DAVIS in the lead role, but that project never came to fruition, leading to the Cynthia Erivo version that we got
A Star Is Born (2018) - Numerous performers were considered for the role of Ally, including JENNIFER LOPEZ, RIHANNA, SHAKIRA, JANELLE MONAE, KESHA, BEYONCÉ and DEMI LOVATO (bear in mind these are the names that were considered just for the role of Ally which went to Lady Gaga, there were other versions of an A Star Is Born remake in development long before this)
Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018) - JULIANNE MOORE was initially cast as Lee Israel in April 2015, before dropping out that July after creative disputes with Nicole Holofcener, who still intended to direct at that point. Marielle Heller and Melissa McCarthy took over the project in May 2016
Elle (2016) - Paul Verhoeven originally intended the film to be an American production, set in Boston or Chicago, and as such considered many Hollywood actors for the part, including NICOLE KIDMAN, CHARLIZE THERON, JULIANNE MOORE, MARION COTILLARD, DIANE LANE, SHARON STONE and JENNIFER JASON LEIGH, before moving production to France in order to prevent the more controversial material being watered down or removed entirely
Jackie (2016) - Initially the film was to be directed by Darren Aronofsky and star his tgen partner RACHEL WEISZ in the lead role, but the project fell apart once their romantic relationship ended in 2010
Gone Girl (2014) - REESE WITHERSPOON produced the adaptation of the novel with the intention to play Amy as well, but ended up only producing
Gravity (2013) - Multiple actors were prevented from playing the part of Dr Ryan Stone due to scheduling conflicts: ANGELINA JOLIE, NATALIE PORTMAN, MARION COTILLARD and BLAKE LIVELY were all offered the role at one stage or another. Sandra Bullock then won the part over many other actors that were considered, including SCARLETT JOHANSSON and REBECCA HALL
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011) - Many actors were considered for the role of Lisbeth Salander, including EVA GREEN, ANNE HATHAWAY, JENNIFER LAWRENCE, LEA SEYDOUX and ELLEN PAGE, among others
Changeling (2008) - Angelina Jolie won the role of multiple other actors who campaigned for it, including HILARY SWANK and REESE WITHERSPOON
The Devil Wears Prada (2006) - KIM BASINGER was considered for the role of Miranda Priestly
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004) - KATE BECKINSALE lobbied hard for the role of Clementine, which ended up going to Kate Winslet
Frida (2002) - Hayden Herrera’s biopic of Frida Kahlo was first optioned in 1988, and over the course of development the lead role attracted interest from MERYL STREEP, JESSICA LANGE and MADONNA
Chicago (2002) - TONI COLETTE was first offered the role of Roxie but turned it down. Many actors were then considered, with Rob Marshall saying he met with “10 or more women” including MARISA TOMEI, CHRISTINA APPLEGATE and MILLA JOVOVICH before casting Renee Zellweger
Moulin Rouge! (2001) - COURTNEY LOVE auditioned for the role of Satine, and even helped clear licensing rights for the use of Smells Like Teen Spirit in the film, but she was still beaten out by Nicole Kidman, as were KATE WINSLET, RENEE ZELLWEGER and CATHERINE ZETA-JONES, among others
Bridget Jones’ Diary (2001) - Many actors were offered and turned down the role of Bridget, including TONI COLLETTE, NICOLE KIDMAN, KRISTIN SCOTT THOMAS and EMILY WATSON, with HELENA BONHAM CARTER and TILDA SWINTON also considered for it, among others. RACHEL WEISZ was also mentioned but was considered “too beautiful” for the part (bit of an insult to everyone else who was considered)
Requiem For A Dream (2000) - FAYE DUNAWAY was initially offered the role of Sara, but turned it down
As always, these lists aren’t exhaustive, I only include some of the names in long lists, most of these will have many names attached to them (Gravity and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo have tons), so there will probably be some I missed out

2020.06.30 10:39 Jodyberg 21[F4M] Europe only

I'm feeling a bit embarrassed writing a post here, hence I'm using an alternative account so my friends don't find out about me.
I like being straight to the point, so I'll try to talk about topics that might be a deal breaker in a future relationship, so I don't make anyone waste time. I believe in the fact that a good relationship needs to be built with a good friendship first, so if we last good months as friends it's a good sign.
Facts about me:
- I'm currently a uni student and knowledge plays an important part in my life, so I would like my future partner to be career driven in order to understand each other better.
- I'm living in Europe.
- About sexuality: that doesn't play an important role at all in my life. I have a pretty low libido, and I won't do any of this until further in the relationship.
- Hobbies: I can adapt to lots of activities, except if they're dangerous or require extreme physical abilities (like running for more than 30 minutes 😂). I don't play games though, but that doesn't mean I'm not willing to learn.
-Body type: a mix between Zooey Deschanel and Jennifer Lopez body type, so I'm short.
- I want kids and a stable happy family in the near future, so obviously I need a responsible person who wants and likes kids.

During the day I'm busy dealing with my responsibilities so if I take time to answer is because I don't have my phone handy. I'm looking forward to read your message! Please describe yourself as much as you feel like sharing when writing me a message 😊

2020.06.27 22:50 JamesEarhart The Pledge -- Historical Fiction

Note: This is the beginning of a manuscript I am working on at the moment. It's still in the rough stages right now, but hoping to get some feedback, positive or negative. The story as a whole centers around the morning of 9/11 and the aftermath, using fictional characters. Below are the first two chapters.

ON A CLEAR DAY
Pure darkness.
That is how she found herself immersed in this world when she came to consciousness.
One moment she was sitting in her cubicle, preparing for the day and in an instant, she was thrown from her chair. When she regained consciousness, she could feel her cheek pressed against the industrial carpet.
She opened her eyes to a pitch black environment.
Have I gone blind?!
She slowly rose to her hands and knees. An eerie silence suspended in the normally busy office air. Within seconds of her initial assessment, a chorus of panicked voices rolled in her direction like a tsunami crashing on the shore.
A primal scream from a distressed female coworker pierced through the darkness.
“Somebody break the window. BREAK IT!!”
Her pulse began to race.
She tried to breathe to calm her nerves, but when she inhaled, her mouth and lungs were annihilated by the acrid taste of thick smoke.
Her eyes welled from the pain but also from a horrifying question that she never thought she would ponder on this Tuesday morning.
Am I going to die?
The woman’s breaths were hastened by the rising hysteria on the office floor. She heard office equipment and furniture, now serving as makeshift battering rams, being repeatedly smashed into the windows.
She crawled across the floor feeling for anything familiar, feeling chunks of debris on the carpet before reaching out and coming across the still warm carcass lying in front of her.
The woman was in such a state of confusion she barely registered any shock as she crawled over the body of the unidentified coworker. She continued to crawl until she recognized the curvature of a desk and staggered as she pulled herself up.
What happened?
Before she could answer the question, her coworkers breached the narrow glass window of the office.
Streaks of sunlight punched through the darkness. Smoke brushed past her and out the broken window, creating a violent piercing sound, which only elevated her pulse. In desperate need of air, she and the nearby coworkers trudged toward the window.
The woman pushed her way through the crowd before falling on top of the window sill; the top half of her body hung over the edge as she tried to inhale the fresh air.
Her hands clung to the concrete edge as the black smoke rushed over her. The shock of overwhelming fear coursed throughout her body. She could feel the heat from the office fire penetrating her skin.
The fear reached a crescendo as she looked down to the Austin J. Tobin Plaza, a thousand feet below, at the base of the World Trade Center.
Through the smoke, she could make out the bronze sculpture known as “The Sphere” in the center of the Plaza. It looked like a miniature toy from her current perspective. People in the plaza below were running from the area, except a man in a dark blue uniform standing next to the sculpture. The police officer appeared to be looking in her direction.
Help me!
The woman wanted to shout out for help but she knew it was futile. She became lightheaded clinging to the edge of the North Tower from the staggering height.
This isn’t happening. This can’t be happening!
The heat of the ever growing flames and thickening smoke quickly brought her back to the reality of the situation.
As she turned her head to look away, she witnessed a coworker fall out of a nearby window and rapidly plummet to the ground. She closed her eyes and prayed for help under her breath, but deep down inside, she realized it would go unanswered.
The glass window next to her broke and the head of a young man emerged. He was standing up and hanging on to the steel column. The man was taking in huge gulps of air. His clothes drenched in perspiration.
He ripped off his tie; they both envied the inanimate object’s liberation as they watched it flutter and dance away from the towering inferno.
Hanging over the steel column, he looked to his left and locked eyes with her.
They had worked on the same floor for two years. They were both young; in their mid twenties. There was a mutual attraction and hints of flirtation during their time as colleagues, but he never had the courage to ask her out. Although she always exhibited kindness, he was intimidated by her beauty.
Two weeks ago they attended their boss’ wedding in the Hamptons . Her long sandy blonde hair, floral print summer dress and sun kissed skin only accentuated her beauty.
During the reception, she pulled the reluctant young man out of his seat and onto the dance floor. The DJ mixed in the new cover of Lady Marmalade, I’m Real by Jennifer Lopez before segueing into Family Affair by Mary J. Blige. He obliged her for a few songs before retreating to the bar and spending the rest of the evening downing cheap beer.
His heart pounded watching her on the dance floor. Her carefree spirit and ability to live in the moment naturally brought all the eyes in the room on her. He was a lanky accountant with dark curly hair and a shortage of self-confidence. In his eyes, she was way out of his league.
The event was over by the time the young man worked up the liquid courage to speak to her.
“Someday.” he whispered to himself at the end of that warm summer night. Someday he would tell their future children of the time he almost let their mother get away. That night he left with hope in his heart.
Here he was now, next to her as they desperately clung to the edge of the North Tower over ninety floors above ground. What could he say to help her? He was too paralyzed by fear to offer words of comfort… or hope.
They grimaced in pain when the thick, searing black smoke rushed past them, burning their skin. The fire inside the office had grown exponentially. Their labored breaths worsened and they were on the verge of suffocation.
The young woman and man looked into each other’s eyes once more; resignation resided on both of their faces.
The young man stepped further out into the open air and extended his trembling hand across the steel column. The young woman’s eyes were red rimmed as she stood up, reached out and accepted his hand.
Their bodies trembled at the horrific decision that was forced upon them. He looked to her for reassurance; she gave him a nod.
It was their only choice.
Her fingers moved to interlock with his. Despite their predicament, this gave her a slight sense of comfort.
Maybe in another life.
He would always love her.
The young woman and man stepped off the ledge and took the plunge together.

DAVID
The beeping of his wristwatch reminded him It was nine o’clock.
Officer David Cruz witnessed the entire exchange unfold as he stood in the center of the Tobin Plaza.
He was twenty eight years old and on the verge of finishing his probationary period with the New York Police Department. He stood slightly over six feet tall and one hundred and eighty five pounds of lean muscle. He found himself in a situation where overwhelming was an understatement.
David and his partner, Lottie Martin, were working foot patrol that Tuesday morning. At half past eight they headed northbound in response to a reported gas leak at Church and Lispenard. It was routine, nothing out of the ordinary during a patrol. David and Lottie would simply provide support for the FDNY on site should anything arise.
When they arrived, the battalion from lower Manhattan had their meters out, inspecting a sewer grate. Lottie came out of a nearby shop with two hot cups of coffee. She handed one to David.
“It rained like hell last night,” he said.
“Gave us a beautiful morning, probie.”
David was still irritated by the storm last night. He scored lower level seats behind home plate to watch the Yankees take on the Red Sox in the final regular season game between the bitter rivals. Ace Roger Clemens was vying for his 20th win against his old team. David and fifty thousand fans sat in the rain during the two hour delay before the announcement to postpone the game was made over the public-address system.
He groveled during the entire ninety minute subway commute to his home in Queens. He still made sure to kiss his sleeping infant son Diego before slipping into bed with his wife Maria. He stirred in bed for a while, still irked by the postponement of the game and what little sleep he would get before rising for his morning shift.
David took a sip of coffee while watching the firefighters investigate the potential leak across the street. The firefighters expressed little concern. In a few minutes, he and Lottie would continue their patrol and head westbound on Lispenard. Another uneventful day in Tribeca.
He looked to the sky. Lottie was right; it was a cobalt blue sky on a crisp September morning. ‘Severe clear’ is the term aviators use to describe unlimited visibility conditions. Today was a textbook example of the term.
That was when IT caught his eye.
The silver underbelly of a commercial jetliner flying over the island of Manhattan. It was coming in low and it was coming in fast.
The plane disappeared behind the art deco brick facade of 32 Sixth Avenue before it reappeared a second later heading south of the building. David and Lottie froze; only their eyes moved to follow the path of the plane.
He saw the plane heading full speed into Tower 1, the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
It slammed into the upper portion of the tower. The plane exploded upon impact, creating a terrifying orange, diagonal, fiery glow that must have been ten stories high. The explosion reverberated throughout lower Manhattan. For a moment, sheer terror surged throughout David’s body.
“Holy shit! Holy shit,” yelled several of the firefighters.
David and Lottie dropped their coffee cups and sprinted southbound on Church Street. The complex was less than a mile away.
Lottie yelled into her radio, “10-13, 10-13! A plane has hit the World Trade Center.”
The partners continued their sprint down Church Street, threading through traffic and groups of frozen bystanders looking at the damage done to the North Tower.
David followed Lottie’s lead. She was a former track star at Syracuse who ran the New York Marathon every year, finishing in the top tier of her age group. Now forty three and in her twentieth year working foot patrol for the First Precinct, she had taken David under her wing. She was tough, fair but most of all uncompromising when it came to serving her community as a police officer. Lottie saw herself as a shepherd keeping the wolves at bay. It did not take long for David to admire her.
Shortly before nine o’clock, they ran up the steps between two black, low-rise buildings known as Four and Five World Trade Center as they entered the Tobin Plaza. Lottie ran to a nearby group of confused tourists and directed them to Church Street.
David looked up at the impact zone. Paper rained down like confetti at a ticker-tape parade. It would have looked like a normal parade, but the paper was accompanied by large and small fiery objects that were intermittently blown out the windows of the impact zone. This was a ticker-tape parade welcoming someone to Hell.
That was when his eyes locked on the couple. He could make out her blonde hair and he could see the man rip off his tie. He was standing next to “The Sphere” when we saw the woman popping her head in and out of the window while looking below. He felt her eyes were on him, begging for help. A real life drama was unfolding above and a feeling came over him that he truly never felt before: helplessness.
He saw their hands link up across the narrow column of the tower, and then he saw them jump.
David’s olive complexion turned ghostly white as his eyes followed the two interlocking silhouettes hurling down the eastside of the North Tower. The panic and chaos in the area around him slowed to a crawl.
The only sound David could hear was the plaza music playing an instrumental version of the Bee Gees How Deep is Your Love. The light-hearted pop ballad served as a cruel background tease while terror raged in lower Manhattan. The lyrics popped into David’s head as we watched the couple descend to their demise.
‘Cause we’re living in a world of fools
Breaking us down when they should all let us be
We belong to you and me.
His eyes never left them.
The explosion from the couple slamming into the pavement jolted David from his catatonic state. He looked away in horror for a moment before returning his eyes to the scene of the impact. He wished he hadn’t looked.
Blood pooled and splattered around the flattened clothes at the base of the building. That was all that was left of them.
“Oh my God,” he said under his breath.
David surveyed the landscape and saw more empty suits and dresses enveloped in blood, scattered around the base of the tower. He saw multiple body parts separated from their owners. In front of him and to his left was the outdoor concert stage. A leg hung over the roof of the stage. It was an ever growing detritus with no end in sight.
David’s eyes veered up again.
He could make out dozens of poor souls gathered in the blown out windows, hanging on to the side of the North Tower. Several people waved flags desperately trying to get the attention of the circling helicopters. David grew ill when he realized their fate came down to one of two choices: burn alive or jump to your death.
David looked over his shoulder and saw Lottie running toward him. The chaotic sounds inside of the complex returned when Lottie grabbed him and said, “We have to clear this plaza now! Do you understand? Are you with me?”
David snapped out of his catatonic state and responded with a nod. He was embarrassed that he let the situation control him. His focus returned and he looked Lottie in the eyes.
“I’m good. I’m good.”
Lottie ran away from David to guide a small group. She calmly cleared them from the area before directing others. David spotted a cameraman in the plaza eagerly shooting footage of the people falling and jumping out of the North Tower. He approached the man.
“Sir, you need to exit the premises immediately.”
The cameraman said nothing to David. He flashed his press pass before stepping aside to film the ongoing devastation above. The cameraman pointed his camera at the upper portion of the North Tower. He then moved his camera down to track something... or someone. Angered, David pushed the camera down and got in the man’s face before hearing the now familiar explosion behind him.
“What the fuck is your problem?! Clear the area now or you will be arrested.”
“Fuck off! Do your job and don’t stop me from doing mine!”
The cameraman stormed away from David to get closer to the burning tower. David chased after him.

To be continued...
If you made it this far, thank you for the read!

2020.06.06 16:29 finnagains Quibi’s Slow Start Is Due to Having No Popular Titles, Poor Marketing — Analysis - Millionaire Bosses Re-Invent Youtube - by Tyler Hersko (Indie Wire) 3 June 2020

Despite execs arguing that the pandemic hurt the service, analysts counter that Quibi is floundering due to strategic flaws from the outset.
One of the defining strengths of Quibi, the short-form streaming service that launched on April 6, was its ability to court a wide variety of advertisers. But now, nearly two months after launch and with viewership staying low, some of the major companies that advertise on the streaming service are reportedly becoming concerned about the platform’s slow start.
The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Quibi advertisers such as PepsiCo, Yum Brands, Anheuser-Busch InBev, and Walmart are among the companies seeking to defer payments due to the streaming service’s low viewership numbers. Representatives from those companies did not return requests for comment.
The apparent concerns among Quibi’s advertisers cast further uncertainty on the streaming service’s long-term viability. Viewership at most competing streaming services is on the rise due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but the mobile-only Quibi, which raised $1.75 billion prior to launch and regularly releases 10-minute (or shorter) episodes of its original series, has not reaped similar benefits. Quibi has also contended with executive turnover — Megan Imbres, who handled Quibi’s brand and content marketing, departed in April — and has begun to cancel shows as it looks to keep costs down. Quibi told employees in a recent internal memo obtained by IndieWire that its senior leadership team has volunteered to take a 10 percent pay cut and stressed that it would not be laying off staff as part of cost-saving measures.
Quibi founder Jeffrey Katzenberg expressed disappointment with Quibi’s early performance in a New York Times interview in May. While Quibi hasn’t released viewership numbers for any of its shows, CEO Meg Whitman told IndieWire in a recent interview that Quibi had been downloaded 4.2 million times as of May 26. The number of users who are actually using Quibi is less clear; Katzenberg told the New York Times that Quibi had 1.3 million active users as of May 11 and the number of paying users is likely less, as Quibi has offered free trials that run for as long as 90 days for some early adopters with select wireless providers.
Netflix, by comparison, had around 182 million subscribers as of April 21, while Disney recently said its Disney+ service, which launched late last year, had over 54 million subscribers as of May 5. Though Quibi has reportedly fared better with mobile users compared to WarnerMedia’s new HBO Max, which Bloomberg reported had only 90,000 first day mobile downloads, HBO Max is also available on computers and most smart televisions.
Though Quibi has partnered with a variety of popular filmmakers and actors, such as Chrissy Teigen and Liam Hemsworth, the streaming service’s unclear marketing and dubious value proposition have made it difficult for the platform to connect with prospective subscribers, according to Nitesh Patel, the director of wireless media strategies at research firm Strategy Analytics.
“Despite all the big names that have been involved with Quibi, like celebrities, shows, and directors that are contributing content to the platform, I still don’t know what Quibi actually means to people,” Patel said in an interview. “Part of the problem has to do with the value proposition. People don’t know what Quibi is and the content might not be there or optimized accordingly. In order to counteract that, they’ve extended the trial period to three months because they recognized that it will take some time for people to understand the service.”
A subscription to the ad-supported version of Quibi costs $4.99 per month, while a subscription to the ad-free version costs $7.99 per month. Though cheaper than most other streaming services on the market, Quibi faces fierce competition in a highly-competitive market. The popular Disney+ has expanded its subscriber base in recent months and NBCUniversal is gearing up to release its Peacock streaming service nationally on July 15.
Whitman, who served as president and CEO of eBay and helped the online retailer become one of the internet’s leading businesses, argued that some of the confusion around Quibi was due to the service offering an entirely new experience for consumers that is unlike the streaming services already on the market.
“We are creating a new category and it’s not that dissimilar to what I did with eBay, when nobody knew what e-commerce was,” Whitman said in an interview. “What we’re doing does not exist, so it doesn’t fall into a neat bucket. We’re premium video content on your mobile device with a unique viewing technology. It’s something that doesn’t exist, which is why it’s a little hard to explain. But people who use it understand it.”
The unique viewing technology Whitman referred to is called Turnstyle, which allows users to seamlessly switch between horizontal and vertical displays. Turnstyle allows Quibi content creators to display different scenes or character perspectives in their project depending on which way a smartphone using the Quibi app is held.
Katzenberg and Whitman stressed in the months leading up to Quibi’s launch that they did not see streamers such as Netflix or Hulu as rivals, as Quibi was designed to be used while users are outside during the day, such as in line at a coffee shop or while on public transportation. While Quibi’s Turnstyle technology is unlike any viewing feature on other streaming services, Quibi is still a mobile phone-oriented platform and a subscription-based streaming service, which means that it is inevitable that it will compete with preexisting subscription-based streamers, as well as popular free apps such as YouTube and Snapchat, according to Patel. He added that there have already been platforms similar to Quibi, such as the now-defunct go90 from Verizon and Vivendi’s Studio+.
“We’ve seen go90 from Verizon, which was ad-funded and completely free, and it still didn’t gain any attraction,” Patel said. “If we give them a bit longer, perhaps consumers will have more of an incentive to dip in. That said, the amount of competition is absolutely huge due to things such as mobile gaming and social apps like TikTok and WhatsApp that are all taking time away from Quibi.”
Regardless of what platforms it intends to compete with, Quibi’s mobile-only “on-the-go” design philosophy has been challenged by the coronavirus pandemic, which has forced most Americans to stay indoors, where they already have access to large televisions and computer screens that boast all of the industry’s popular streaming services. Katzenberg addressed how the ongoing pandemic has challenged Quibi in an interview with the New York Times in May.
“I attribute everything that has gone wrong to coronavirus,” Katzenberg said in the New York Times interview. “Everything. But we own it.”
Whitman noted that the pandemic has posed difficulties for the streaming service but said that the platform was making moves to adapt to the situation.
“The use case we really thought was the on-the-go mobile viewing from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.,” Whitman said. “You’d leave the house and get a cup of coffee or watch Quibi while waiting at a doctor’s office. Of course, we launched on April 6, when people weren’t on-the-go. Right at the start we had requests for TV viewing, so we responded right away and launched AirPlay on (May 26) and Chromecast will be coming in a couple of weeks.”
Quibi’s Turnstyle technology does not work on AirPlay. The platform’s content is also unable to be shared via screenshots or video clips — a key way Quibi’s targeted millennial demographic tends to discuss films and TV shows — but Katzenberg told the New York Times that that feature would be coming sometime in the future.
There’s no doubt that the coronavirus has impacted Quibi, but the platform’s most significant challenge has and will continue to be justifying its price tag when there are so many competing services that boast high-quality original films and television shows, according to Danyaal Rashid, a thematic analyst at analytics firm GlobalData.
“Of all the streamers out there, Quibi is the most impacted (by the pandemic) because it positioned itself as ‘something on-the-go,’” Rashid said in an interview. “The more important thing is the price, when you have Disney+ at $6.99 per month or basic Netflix for $8.99 per month. Price really shaped what has happened with Quibi. Quibi is trying to forge is own segment in the market but to gain value it will always come out to content. It needs to start to attempt to lead in content to warrant that dollar figure.”
Quibi launched with 50 titles and has promised to release 175 series within its first year. Its release schedule includes three hours of new content every weekday, and many of Quibi’s releases are star-studded: Idris Elba, Chance the Rapper, and Christoph Waltz are but a few of the many well-known Hollywood celebrities who star in Quibi shows, while A-listers such as Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon, Guillermo del Toro, and Steven Spielberg have created or have plans to create Quibi projects from behind the camera.
Although Quibi has partnered with numerous well-known talents to produce or star in its exclusive titles, none of Quibi’s releases have come close to the popularity of series such as “The Mandalorian” or “House of Cards,” the first original series on Disney+ and Netflix, respectively. Critics and journalists haven’t taken to Quibi’s releases either, given the service’s relative lack of post-launch media coverage. Quibi aggressively pitched its titles to journalists in the year leading up to launch and the quantity of Quibi’s similar press releases about its upcoming series made it difficult for critics to differentiate the titles. Star-studded action shows were promoted similarly to sobering documentaries, which caused Quibi’s potentially standout projects to get lost in the mix.
The streaming service also does not offer any acquired content, which was a key marketing point for competitors such as HBO Max, which spent hundreds of millions to acquire the rights to hit shows such as “Friends” and “The Big Bang Theory.” Acquired content was also a significant draw for prospective Disney+ subscribers, given that the platform contains a large amount of popular films and television shows from brands such as Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar.
Quibi must find a way to entice viewers and the platform will need to do more to sell itself beyond boasting that its short-form content is well-produced, according to Doug Clinton, managing partner of tech VC fund Loup Ventures.
“They need to find a way to attract people who want to watch these kinds of shows instead of what they’re watching on YouTube or Instagram,” Clinton said. “A lot of YouTube content is under 10 minutes long and is shot professionally. Having a popular show would definitely help because finding some way for the platform to ingratiate itself with pop culture is important.”
Analysts were somewhat split on how Quibi could course-correct in the months ahead. Clinton suggested that Quibi should focus more on influencer-led content, which could better appeal to the millennial demographic that Quibi is targeting, while Patel suggested that partnerships and bundling — such as getting more ISPs or device makers to install the app onto smartphones — could boost the platform’s usage.
However, both analysts, as well as Rashid, agreed that Quibi would need to market itself better if it wanted to court new subscribers and retain the users who signed up for the 90-day free trials that will be ending in July. Quibi attempted to lean into the confusion in the months leading up to launch — it briefly changed its Twitter name to “WTFisQuibi” in January — but the streaming service will need to get serious about catering to its target audience if it wants to stand out in the market, according to Rashid.
“They hit the market quite hard on social media but it seemed a bit comical,” Rashid said. “People were making fun of what they were getting at. They were targeting millennials and hitting all the millennial buzzwords like ‘short form,’ but they forgot what millennials are renowned for, which is binge watching. They pulled binge watching out of the equation which is crazy, given who they are marketing for. I think there were strategic flaws from the beginning.”

Two scenes that I would love to play out and hopefully finish. So here's hoping for a good partner!
They are long term scenes with plenty of buildup. So, yes, they're slow going but that makes it more fun I think.
Blackmail
This idea involves me at some sort of celebrity function (guest, worker, fan at a show etc) and I find you (the celeb) in some kind of compromising position of your choosing which I ten record and save. I use the footage to blackmail you into being my personal plaything. Making you do what ever I want just to make sure I don't release the footage. The thing is you never get into it completely. Every time i have you do something you curse me out, call me names etc. But here's the rub...your body LOVES what I do. It's like it reacts on its own despite what you're saying. At first it may not but it will over time.
This idea also has a potential set up to be a harem where you help me gather your famous friends just to keep me pleased. This is not a sure thing. this can be discussed, but if you choose to go this route, you'll need to play multiple girls, but only as many as you're comfortable with at one time.
One thing that is a must for this is your character has to be in some sort of relationship. It could their real one or a fake one.
Kinks include: cheating, risky/sneaky sneak, noncon, clothing control, spanking, anal, internal cummng, name calling, light bdsm, and anal.
BLACK MARKET
You play a high profile celebrity of your choice and get kidnapped, taken to a non English speaking country and sold into slavery. You are put up for auction on the black market, of which I attend. No one in attendance realizes who they have or how much money they could actually get for you, so I am able to buy you dirt cheap in the nation's currency. Once you realize I'm American, you believe I'm taking you back to be free. Instead, you find yourself stuck with me while I trick you into thinking you want to stay. Eventually you come to lean on me and depend on me for everything, forgetting your life outside, not even recognizing yourself on tv.
Kinks include: caging, collaring, brainwashing, emotional/mental manipulation, anal, internal cumming, name calling, light bdsm, clothing control, and Stockholm Syndrome
Celebrities I like include, but not limited to: Scarlett Johansson, Selena Gomez, Elizabeth Olsen, Jennifer Lawrence, Ariana Grande, Jennifer Lopez, Zoe Saldana, Anne Hathaway, Anna Kendrick and many others so there a lot of options.
Limits are: Blood, scat, death, and anything way too extreme
I play in the first person, and hope you do to. Please be literate. Replies can fit the scene, meaning longer replies aren't needed, unless it helps progress the scene. Just make sure it's something to build off of, not just a spoken sentence
I would prefer it if your characters put up resistance to make it more realistic. Examples would be asking when we would go home, making statements about your friends and family missing you, etc.

2020.05.02 20:45 ghostofanoutcast I'll see you all on the other side....but first...

Today is officially 3 months since the breakup and it has been a hell of ride! To everyone going through a fresh breakup or breakup that seems is never gonna end, it does truly get better and the process is wack af! I am not here to give advice but to tell you my journey, take what you want from it.
If you wanna skip to the bottom I'll list anything from books/movies/podcast/to music that's helped me along the way. Fyi they're a little all over the place.
Feeling the feels: Me and my partner ended our 6 year relationship, yes he broke up with me but I didnt fight it. For the first few days/weeks I let myself cry and cry. I let it all out, even at work, i would go into the stall and cry. I let myself feel this trainwreck of feelings, never once holding back.
Distractions: I only had a month of distractions until this quarantine hit. I hung out with friends after friends and was going deep into my aerials silks class. I was trying to fill up my day anyway I could. I now do yoga and ride my bike, also after this I'm gonna come out as a top notch cook!
Meditation: So now what do I do in this time of crisis? I meditate. I had alot going on these last few months, I had gotten in an awful car accident, my 6 year relationship ended, my dog needed very expensive medical care, pandemic happened which only made me get laid off from a job I loved.
However. I was holding on, and you will also hold on, I believe in you.
I've been meditating for over 2 years, I made myself the 15 + 5 rule, for this experience. I meditate for 15 minutes and sit with all my feelings, I breath and try to stay focused, if any thoughts come up or feeling I watch them as a separate identity and welcome them, absolutely anything comes up, if I start bawling I too examine where those feelings are coming from. The 5 minute rule is to reminisce, I give myself 5 minutes to play the - could've/wouldve/should've game- we cannot go back and change time and constantly reminiscing past events only makes us forget our present. So I give little time to think about past memories, and then resume to what I'm doing in the moment.
If I myself reminisced for longer than 5 minutes I got closer to calling the suicide hotline. This is why I only gave myself 5 minutes.
Stuff:I let go of certain things that I did not value. Yes I held on to pictures, I put them in a separate folder, they are valuable memories to me that I want to keep, however they're not something I look at. also got rid of FB, In the 3 months I have done NC and no i dont ever lurk their media
Support team: I am grateful to have wonderful friends and family to reset me back to training wheels and then to stop holding my back and let me ride the big kids bike. i fell hard. Time and time again, but I had them there to offer kindness, support, and laughter. I have an amazing therapist who I would go to twice a week and now go to twice a month. I realize not everyone is as lucky to have those support teams, however I would strongly suggest therapy if you can afford it, I think of it as an investment in mental health, truly priceless.
Forgiving myself and them : no one is a perfect human. Absolutely no one. I messed up several times and they did too. We might've said or done something cringey or harmful to ourselves or them. Forgiving us/them is a process within all of this. Not being so hard on ourselves or them. We are only human and bound to make mistakes. It is whether we learn from them or keep repeating -that then becomes intentional-
Thanking myself and them: we all have thoughts that pop into our head. I dont know your situation, I dont know whether they were genuinely wholesome partners or were toxic. We go through anger or some of us skip it entirely. But yes I had some negative thoughts come up about my ex partner. I let them pass by, and never fed into them. I dont think about the 6 years as time wasted. Never. Those 6 years I laughed/cried/loved/hated and learned. I thank them for bringing me experience and am learning from what to do and what to avoid. I sincerely thank you, and wish you the best, if it's not with me them be it with someone that adds love to your life! I myself will continue to love.
Movies/Doc/TV: The Hangover, Minimalism, The Midnight Gospel, The Office, Friends, Parks and Rec, Ozark, He's Just Not That Into You, Hitch, Tiger King, Eat Pray Love, Tidying Up, Chefs Table, Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Cooked,
Podcasts/apps: Ted Talks, The Minimalists, Latinos who Lunch, The Daily, Joe Rogan, How I built This, The Daily, The Try Pod, Headspace(app), Down Dog(app)
Youtube:School of Life(philosophy), Buddist Society of Western Australia(religion), The Dave Ramsey Show(finances), Matty Matheson (food), Hyram (skincare), The Try Guys (4 guys being themselves, humor), Malinda Herman(pure joy), A Colors Show (music)

2020.04.23 21:19 prossnip42 Women slut-shame too, sometimes overwhelmingly so

I hate this notion that a lot of people seem to have that only men tend to slut-shame women for being promiscuous or for having multiple partners. Of course, some men slut-shame women but a lot of women do it as well. In fact, i think women slut-shame overwhelmingly more than men do. Now stop me if you've heard this scenario or a variation of it ladies and gentlemen:
Girl 1: " Did you see (popular girl) the other day?"
Girl 2: "The bitch with the short skirt?
Girl 1: "Yes"
Girl 2: "Yeah, what a slut. I bet she slept with all the boys in her classroom"
I saw and heard catty shit like this all the time towards the "popular girl" in high school or college. And not just that. That happens in the entertainment industry as well. There were so many women calling Shakira and Jennifer Lopez whores online after their performance at the Super bowl. And if you're not into the genre you wouldn't know this but anybody here who's into Kpop will understand what I'm talking about next: A male idol takes their shirt off and grinds on stage like an Amsterdam stripper - perfectly fine. A female idol bends over suggestively or smirks at the camera - Whore! Harlot! Slut!

2020.03.22 01:36 therealslimkay [TOMT] [MOVIE] [late 90s - early 2000s] An American movie that (maybe) starred Jennifer Lopez in a desert setting

I saw it at my friends eight or nine year old birthday party, so it was not made any later than 2005. She specifically played it because the star was someone she was a fan of. It was probably a movie appropriate for a young female audience (think something like A Cinderella Story). I think it was a romantic or drama movie.
I think it starred a 20-30ish woman who might have been played by Jennifer Lopez, or at least someone with a similar vibe. One scene of the movie I remembered kind of clearly was in a desert setting (probably in the middle east) with sand dunes and she’s waving goodbye to a young man who was in a truck for army guys. The man might have been her partner, brother, or son. When the truck is out of sight, she slips and falls down a sand dune and a handsome stranger catches her and saves her.
The next scene I remembered after that was that she kind of adopts to his lifestyle and she’s living rich in the middle east or some other foreign country. At some point she was sitting on a fancy carpet or rug surrounded by expensive shiny things.
Edit: I’m not sure how accurate this is but the plot MIGHT have revolved around a regular girl becoming a princess or queen associated with middle eastern or another foreign royalty. It’s not the princess diaries though.

2020.03.02 11:53 karlallan I started rapidly diffuse thinning at 22. I'm 42 now and have as much hair as I did at 16. AMA

My hair as it looks today
Hey all. I pop my head in fairly frequently to this sub and see a lot of the same questions and concerns come up. I've been beating back baldness for 20 years and I've tried just about everything--fin, min, ketoconazole, supplements, peptides, serums, PRP, microneedling, and a bunch more. I thought I might be able to offer my experience up for those who might find it helpful. I'll try to proactively address as many questions as I can in this post but ask away if you have other questions.
At 22 I started losing my hair fast. In the late 90s hair was about all guys had in terms of ways we could change our appearance. My hair was my identity and losing it felt literally like my life was over. I obsessed about it all the time. It affected my work, my relationships, and my ability to enjoy life.
Right about the time I turned 23 one of my friends had joined a band that was having a lot of success. They were on tour and came to Boston where I lived and we started talking about hair loss. They all told me that they were on propecia and that I should get on it. My response was that I had heard it caused sexual side effects, would make me grow hair on my back, and wouldn't work. They said none of it was true so I made a doctor's appointment for the next week. My doc told me his sons were on it and I shouldn't be concerned so I started it right away.
Before I started propecia, my hair was shedding by what felt like a fistful everyday. About 4 months in to taking fin the shedding started to slow significantly. Within a year the shedding had completely reversed. About a year and half in my hair was restored to what it was before it started thinning.
I took propecia for 15 years with a couple breaks in the middle. I got off it almost 5 years ago at 38 on the advice of a doctor. I've used a combination of min, PRP, microneedling, and other topicals to keep my hair line and density what it is. Below are answers to a bunch of questions I've seen or anticipate being asked grouped by category. Feel free to ask any others you have in the comments--I'm a pretty open book. Also, not my real name so not much to lose by answering.
Side Effects and Post Finasteride Syndrome (PFS)
Does fin work?
How have you kept that magnificent head of hair you have?
What other products do you use or have you tried?
Current Regimen
Products I'm experimenting with but haven't used long enough to ascertain impact
Products I've Tried with Positive Results
Products with no or unknown impact
How did you figure out your regimen and learn what you know?
Dermaroller cleaning instructions
Change the roller out Every 100 to 150 uses. Clean them afterwards by taking a plastic cup, placing some gauze at the bottom for padding (you want to be careful not to bend or damage the needles) add a cup of warm water and a couple denture tablets and let them soak for 30 minutes or so. It sounds weird I know but denture tablets contain enzymes meant to dissolve proteins that alcohol won’t. After they’ve soaked in the denture solution rinse them off with water first and then alcohol and let them dry completely before storing. Best way to keep them sanitary.
Hope this is helpful to some of you at the beginning of your journey. I wish you all the best--do the research and you can get where you want to go. If not, start saving up and DM me and I'll get you the name of the doc who does all the guys in hollywood--apparently he's not cheap but worth it. But if you're like me, you'd rather avoid that in the first place.
